Dallas ISD trustees are weighing closing six schools to close a budget gap

Dallas ISD's closure plan moves toward a vote

  1. 2012Dallas ISD last closed campuses to save money.
  2. Nov. 5Trustees begin discussing the six proposed closures.
  3. Nov. 2026A final decision is expected later in November.
  4. 2027-28Closures would take effect next school year.

If you have a kid in Dallas ISD, this one matters. Trustees began discussing closing six schools Thursday, with a final decision expected later this month. The closures would start in 2027-28. The budget gap is $104 million in one report and $128 million in another.

The list of six: Joseph J. Rhoads Learning Center, N.W. Harllee Early Childhood Center, Harrell Budd Elementary, Ignacio Zaragoza Elementary, Arlington Park Early Childhood Center and Boude Storey Middle School.

At Thursday's hearing, parents fought to keep J.J. Rhoads open, a dual-language school in South Dallas. Trustee Ed Turner said it takes only 9 cents of every $100 in the budget to run, and closing it would tell South Dallas the school is "not worth a dime."

  • Enrollment: about 3,000 students below expectations
  • Rhoads students would move to H.S. Thompson
  • Vote: expected at the next school board meeting

The Wrap

A haunted house where the price of admission is a canned food donation? That's the October tradition at Chosen One Ink, a 16-year-old Arlington tattoo and piercing shop. Every year it turns the back of the studio into a tour of terror, and visitors bring canned goods for its neighbor, Mission Arlington. Scary and generous.
